Inaugural beach rugby tournament a big hit
The first ever beach rugby tournament to have been hosted in Cyprus was a huge success yesterday as both locals and tourists flocked the Finikoudes Beach in Larnaka to watch the event take place. A host of teams from all around the island gathered to compete in a 5-a-side competition whereby the winners of each of the two groups would proceed to the final to compete for the trophy.
Paphos Tigers claimed third place by being the best runners-up while the winners of Group A, Marchwood Dolphins, and winners of Group B, Limassol Crusaders, played out an intriguing final. It was the Dolphins who came out winners at the end, defeating their adversaries 4-2 after an intense match in the blistering heat.
The tournament generated a lot of interest for the sport and it was a joy to see teams from around Cyprus all in one place. The competitiveness shown by each team served as a wonderful appetizer for the league which starts in October.
The president of the Cyprus Rugby Federation (CRF) was quoted saying “I would like to thank the municipality of Larnaka for the invitation to host the first Cyprus Beach rugby tournament and all the teams and CRF staff for making this event a success. Special thanks to our two major sponsors Shark Energy drink and Iacovou Group. The CRF plan to make Beach rugby a regular summer event in Cyprus and an international event also in the near future.”
Keep up with the ongoings of rugby on the island:
