SLOVENIA 07 - 56 CYPRUS
The season kicked off at the weekend with Cyprus eager to start the season in a positive fashion.
The game was played at the Oval stadium - Ljubljana – Slovenia with a vociferous local crowd. Cyprus had number of travelling fans who were not to be outdone. You could hear the chants of “Ela Kypros” providing our boys with the much-needed support.
Our Mighty Mouflons were the stronger outfit in all areas of the field. The pack was well organised, despite not having a big window to train together. Getting together 3 days prior to an international is not an ideal preparation.
It was Cyprus who scored early and built upon the momentum from the opening whistle. Slovenia fought hard to get into the game pinning Cyprus back on a few occasions, but Cyprus held firm.
Captain Billy Cosma stated after the game “this is a proud day for Cyprus Rugby the boys did brilliantly, they were up for the game and put the heart and bodies on the line for their nation. I hope we can continue and get the win against Israel next month”.
Scoring more than 4 tries has meant Cyprus get a bonus point on top of the 4 points for a win, Cyprus sit proudly at the top of the table with 5 points. The next game to be played will be interesting with the other 2 strong nations. Malta who Cyprus beat on their 50 international, host last seasons relegated nation Bulgaria.
Cyprus’ next international will be at home against Israel on the 12th November.
